Charles Stephens is a remarkable teacher who has wrought wonders with my voice after decades of disaster that even medical specialists in Seattle could not figure out or treat. Two years ago, at age 73, my wife encouraged me to see if Charles could do something. Using his teaching skill, ear and unwavering patience, encouragement and understanding, he has worked a miracle. Weekly sessions for about a year and a half allowed Charles to completely rebuild my voice both up and down the scale and inculcate a strong breath control technique unlike anything I ever had. With my voice now secure, I have also benefited considerably from Charles being not only a master of interpretation and nuance but also a stickler for proper pronunciation and the subtle vocalization requirements of Italian, French and German lyrics. In short, I cannot recommend him more strongly as a teacher of voice.

I am a trained musician. Over the years I have had much vocal training and have developed a sound technique. When I started lessons with Charles Stephens, I noticed a marked improvement in my performance. He has shown me how technique is used to enhance vocal quality and expressive performance. Charles is also introducing me to many different styles of music, thereby expanding my repertoire. I feel I am singing better than I ever have, and look forward to continued progress

I was ready to drop out of choir, because of my aging, and untrained voice. Charles maintained that age wasn’t the problem, and that older people could still learn to sing, if they learned the right techniques. He persuaded me to take a couple of lessons, and I was hooked. I was totally untrained, and have made every possible mistake, and am still struggling to reach high notes and to breathe properly, but Charles has made this adventure a joy.

Since studying voice with Charles, I have come to recognize and value my talent and have developed a sense of self-assurance when performing for an audience...As a result of Charles’ music and voice training, I have won numerous awards and certificates in various local and state level vocal competitions. I was offered generous music scholarships from three universities, and have chosen to attend Western Washington University in the fall to major in music and my goal is to follow a musical career path.

I will forever be grateful to Charles for developing my singing voice and for instilling within me confidence and self-esteem.

My lessons are great fun!  I have a wonderful time singing standards and show tunes - no opera, lieder, or church music.  He teaches and accompanies me with humor, tact, and skill.
